I thought I had tried a noacl mount of the share on /usr/home and
it had no effect on the problem. But given your suggestion I tried
again and low and behold... It worked.
noacl is the key..

The home directories are mounted by the OS, not cygwin, on the
U: drive. So I am not clear on how to get that to be "noacl" for
/cygdrive/u (where previously version put it).
But this got me over a hurdle, thanks.
